Green Hedges School

Green Hedges School, a private independent school serving ages 2 through Grade 8 with approximately 190 students, seeks a Director of Communications, with a start date of July 1, 2024 or earlier. The School is located in Vienna, VA, 14 miles west of Washington, DC.

In partnership with members of the senior administration team and other colleagues, the Director of Communications and Marketing is responsible for advancing the brand, mission, program and goals of the school through both the external marketing of the Green Hedges and internal and external communications. This individual is responsible for the School’s strategic marketing and communications plan and oversees content creation and deployment across all of Green Hedges channels (website, social media, news releases, email, newsletters and print publications). In addition, the Director of Communications and Marketing is the Board of Trustees liaison.

The Director of Communications and Marketing is a 12-month, full time position with full employee benefits. The Director of Marketing and Communications is a member of the school’s senior administrative team and reports directly to the Head of School.

          Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategize, create and, deploy, all aspects of the School’s electronic and print communications (internal and external) ensuring the continuity of the School’s brand and message.
  • Oversee the work of print vendors in the production of printed materials across the School’s departments and program areas.
  • Provide communications support materials and tools across school departments and program areas (templates, style guide, branding elements, etc.) and work to ensure editorial and visual consistency in all communications pieces.
  • Manage the production of internal publications including the GHS Welcome Guide, Handbook, and Directory.
  • Design and oversee production of Clippings, the Annual Report, and other school publications.
  • Manage the School’s social media strategy, content, and presence.
  • Work in conjunction with the IT Administrator to oversee the content, design, maintenance, and performance of the Green Hedges website.
  • Serve as school photographer and videographer.
  • Promote and market internal and external school events including admissions and fundraising events.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Philanthropy and Director of Admissions to produce outreach materials for various needs and events.
  • In consultation with the Head of School, plan and create a strategic marketing and advertising plan.
  • Secure advertising agreements and reconcile to budget.
  • Create, place, and review School’s advertisements.
  • Coordinate and manage all publicity and public relations efforts.
  • Work to ensure branding standards are adhered to.
  • Represent Green Hedges at occasional admissions, advancement and special school-wide events as needed.
  • Function as part of the Leadership Team and work collegially with other administrative leaders, faculty and staff members, parents, and the greater community.

          Role as Board Liaison includes:

  • Prepare for Board of Trustee meetings with the input of the Board Chair and Head of School.
  • Oversee uploading of documents to the Board portal and ensuring that documents are up to date.
  • Prepare Board packet and send to Board members.
  • Take Board meeting minutes.

    Requirements

  • Proficient knowledge of the independent school setting.
  • A minimum of three to five years experience with independent schools.
  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree, Master’s preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Perform professional duties efficiently, manage resources effectively, and meet deadlines and meeting schedules set by the School.
  • Ability to work independently and complete tasks fully to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to adjust work schedule to meet situational work demands.
  • Work diligently and promptly to maintain positive and constructive home-school communication.
  • A high level of energy, initiative, confidentiality, collaborative skills.
  • Successful completion of required background check.

    General

  • Perform professional duties, efficiently manage resources, and meet deadlines and meeting schedules set by the School.
  • Perform professional duties as assigned by the Head of School. These duties include but are not limited to recess duty, lunch duty, and carpool duty.
  • Serve as a member of the GHS Administrative Team.
  • Prepare reports for the Head of School and Board as needed.
  • Work to be a positive advocate of Green Hedges at all times.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings.
  • Support the School and its leadership.
