Associate Director of Communications

Working alongside the Director of Communications and Communications Manager, the Associate Director of Communications is responsible for strategic communications, marketing, and public relations school-wide for both internal and external audiences. The Associate Director must be a creative, “big picture” thinker, a collaborative builder of relationships, and an effective communicator who understands independent schools. The Associate Director of Communications reports to the Director of Communications and is the operational lead of the communications team.


Alongside Director of Communications, plan and execute strategic communications to support a consistent voice for the School that resonates with multiple audiences while emphasizing Newman’s belief in strong relationships and high expectations

Collaboratively plan, compose, and/or edit a high volume of communications to parents, faculty and staff, alumni, Board of Governors, and other important constituencies; oversee traffic of communications and approve all content prior to sending

Oversee the planning, writing, editing, and design of community publications including spring magazine and fall annual report

Collaborate with colleagues across the School with a particular emphasis on developing and sharing content to support Advancement and Admission

Identify and execute social media and multimedia strategies that take advantage of visual opportunities to tell stories of life at Newman

Ensure that excellent and consistent design elements are incorporated into all materials across all platforms; coordinate with external graphic designers, photographers, printers, and other creative vendors to produce high quality content

Guide and support the division leaders and faculty/staff in their communications for both internal and external audiences

Serve as a point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate response with other stakeholders

Applies standards consistently of the highest expectations for all of Newman’s content strategy and communication efforts

Demonstrates excellent writing and editing ability with attention to detail and sensitivity to tone

Demonstrates capacity for planning and time management necessary to manage major long-term  projects (such as publications) while remaining attentive to daily communications priorities; must have ability to keep larger-scale projects going while responding frequently to immediate needs

Demonstrates adaptability to respond to shifting priorities both to manage emerging situations and take advantage of new opportunities

Actively participate in professional development opportunities to gain and apply new knowledge for the benefit of the School’s content strategy

Some evening and weekend work is expected through active participation in School events and to address communication/media opportunities as needed


The ideal candidate will have…

A minimum of three years’ experience in communications, marketing, or journalism; non-profit or independent school setting preferred

Demonstrated excellence in written communications including writing for and editing publications

Strong project management experience with exceptional attention to details and deadlines

Knowledge of current and emerging social media trends and practices

Experience and aptitude with digital photography and video

Graphic design experience (InDesign) preferred

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
